XLRI Jamshedpur Celebrated its 68th Annual Convocation

Jamshedpur : Xavier School of Management, one of India’s oldest and premier B-Schools, celebrated its 68th Annual Convocation today in its campus today.

XLRI conferred the prestigious Sir Jehangir Ghandy Medal for Industrial and Social Peace Award to Mr. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons. His unyielding commitment to our society and to our nation has embodied high standards of ethical leadership through the strategic decisions that has not only led to the growth of the Tata brand but also reinforced the lasting Tata legacy of prioritising national interests.

The 68th Annual Convocation Event started off with the Academic Procession followed by the Director, Fr S George S.J.’s report followed by the Chairman, T V Narendran, CEO & MD, Tata Steel’s address to the graduating students. He also presented the Sir Jehangir Ghandy Medal for Industrial and Social Peace Award to Mr. N Chandrasekaran, the Chief Guest & Convocation Speaker.

Accepting the medal from the Chairman, Mr. N Chandrasekaran said, “I express my sincere heartfelt gratitude to XLRI for honoring me with the Sir Jehangir Ghandy Medal for Social & Industrial Peace. The graduates of XLRI excel in business, today there are many role models in the industry who are from the proud alumnus network of XLRI.”

“We have seen history in the last 4 years. Nation building impulse is as relevant now as it was earlier. There are major energy transitions, digital transitions in the form of AI & Machine Learning, Supply Chain Transitions that we are facing today. But India is uniquely placed because we can invest in each of these transitions today because of the geopolitical advantages that our country has. By 2030, Tata Group will move to 70% Green Energy”, he added.

Mr. Chandrasekaran also highlighted the priorities of Tata Group that includes: Simplification, Synergy, Sustainability, Supply Chain Transformation & Digital Transformations. These are achieved via integrity, sound strategy, great execution, good governance and consistent practice. He asked the students to follow 3 important traits for a successful career that includes a positive attitude, a winning set and the ability to work hard.

He also congratulated the students saying, “Reflect on the journey that you will travel from today. The next generation of leaders is you. India awaits for your contribution in the form of the story you will create. Congratulations to each one of you.”

In recognition of dedicated service & commitment of the XLRI employees, Fr Donald D’Silva S.J., Dean (Administration & Finance), XLRI presented the Medals for Long Service to 7 employees for 25 years of service and 5 employees for 15 years of service. Further, Dr. Sanjay Patro, Dean (Academics) bestowed Medals for Academic Excellence to 14 deserving students. The event was then followed by the distribution of Diploma degrees to the 551 graduating students, marking the beginning of their promising professional journeys.

Mr. TV Narendran, CEO & MD, Tata Steel & Chairman, XLRI addressed the crowd stating, “XLRI is the first management school set up in the country and today it is celebrating its 75 years of existence. Our competition has changed since 1949, there are many other management institutes in the country today. At XLRI, we are at a constant quest to deliver better to our students. There is also an expectation that over the next 20-30 years, it is going to be a India-China moment, keeping in mind the kind of progress that India is making. I would also take a moment to thank the Jesuits for their immense leadership and contribution in setting up this Institute and making it a success today. Congratulations to the graduating batch.”



Mr. N Chandrasekaran, the Chief Guest, Convocation Speaker and the recipient of the Sir Jehangir Ghandy Medal for Industrial and Social Peace Award, XLRI also laid the foundation stone for the new student hostel on the day of 68th Annual Convocation. Earlier on December 10th, 2023, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, Vice-President of India had laid the foundation stone for the new Research Scholar’s Residence at XLRI Jamshedpur Campus.

Speaking about the momentous occasion, Fr. S George S.J., Director, XLRI Jamshedpur said, “It is an historic year of celebration as we commemorate 75 Years of educating young minds and contributing to building our nation. My heartfelt gratitude to our Chief Guest Mr. N Chandrasekaran for gracing our event today.” He fondly remembered Late Dr. Ashis K Pani, Former Dean (Academics) for his 25 years of dedicated service and commitment to XLRI Jamshedpur. (Sept 1964 – Feb 2024)

XLRI, as an institution has committed itself to brace holistic approaches for supporting students’ stress and well-being. On this regard ADSA (Associate Dean Student Affairs) and Psychotherapy and Counselling Services at XLRI are glad to introduce a student club named “Akeera” meaning “Sunlight.



“As XLRI is celebrating its Platinum Jubilee Year, we have pledged to take responsibility for celebrating togetherness in extending help to the community for mental well-being. As members of this club, students provide peer support and make themselves available to others by offering means to de-stress. This will help in advocating mental health awareness, emotional well-being practices, stigma reduction and breaking barriers to promote help seeking behaviors”, said Dr Pooja Mohanty – Head, Psychotherapy and Counselling Services, XLRI, Jamshedpur.

Akeera club hosted its first event known as “High Fives and Farewells” on 22nd March’24 at 5:30 pm. This is an informal farewell to senior students and this event serves as a platform for students to unwind, connect with peers, and celebrate connection in the community. This occasion relates to unfolding emotions and feelings through games, music to groove away with stress, song dedications, t-shirt scribble to express gratitude, thanksgiving, and appreciation to friends.
