May 31 is celebrated as World No Tobacco Day to raise awareness about the hazardous health effects of tobacco and advocate for effective government policies to reduce tobacco use worldwide. Tobacco consumption not only affects the health of individuals and farmers who grow it but also leads to deforestation. This year's theme is "We need food, not tobacco," which aims to encourage tobacco farmers to grow sustainable, nutritious crops. The campaign urges governments to create strong measures to prevent tobacco-growing and impose high taxes on tobacco products to discourage their use. In India, 267 million adults use tobacco, mostly smokeless forms such as khaini, gutkha, and betel quid.
