A tragic incident unfolded in the national capital on Sunday when a 25-year-old medical student from Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) allegedly took his own life for unknown reasons. Navdeep Singh, studying in his second year of an MD program and working as a junior resident in radiology-PG, was found dead in his room located at the Parsi Anjuman Guest House in Central Delhi.

Navdeep’s parents, unable to reach him via phone, requested a friend of his to check in on Navdeep. Upon finding the room door locked from the inside, the friend had to force it open, finding Navdeep’s lifeless body. Consequently, the police authorities were promptly informed and an active investigation is now underway.

“With a very heavy heart, we mourn the untimely and tragic demise of our beloved post- graduate resident Dr. Navdeep Singh of batch 2023, Department of Radio-diagnosis, MAMC. His presence will be profoundly missed, and his memory will forever remain in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace,” a release from Resident Doctors’ association said.

Who was NEET topper Navdeep Singh?

Dr Singh hit the headlines after he got AIR 1 in NEET in June 2017, when he had said he wanted to study at Maulana Azad Medical College because of its fee structure. Singh had said cracking NEET was his main target and therefore, he was satisfied with his 88 per cent in Class 12 board examinations.

“When he wasn’t picking up calls, his father sent a friend to check on him. The friend found that the door of his hostel room was locked from inside. It was prima facie found that the deceased died by suicide. Inquest proceedings are ongoing. No suicide note has been found,” a Delhi Police officer was quoted saying in a report by the Indian Express .

“Gopal had spoken with Navdeep on Saturday evening and he was perfectly normal. He had not indicated anything that he was having any stress. He used to share everything with his parents. We are surprised at how he took such an extreme step”, Sharma, a family friend of Dr Singh’s father, said.
