Uttaranchal High Court: While hearing a petition wherein a ban was sought on the ‘Maha panchayat’ which was allegedly called by the right-wing groups, mainly the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal against love Jihad in Uttarkashi, the Division Bench comprising of Vipin Sanghi C.J. and Rakesh Thapliyal, J., directed the State to ensure that law and Order is maintained in the State.
A girl was allegedly kidnapped by two men, a Muslim and a Hindu, the local residents considered it as a case of ‘love Jihad’ and this promoted communal tensions in the State. Protests were observed in several parts of the State and posters were pasted on shops owned by Muslims, threatening them to vacate the shops and the area before the Maha panchayat. Thereafter, several appeals were made before the State to stop the Maha Panchayat and a Public Interest Litigation was filed before the Court.
The Court issued a notice and directed the State to maintain law and order in the State and fulfill its Constitutional obligation and ensure the safety of life and property.
