The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) now intends to implement Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication, facial recognition for candidates, and live AI-driven CCTV surveillance to curb “cheating, fraud, unfair means, and impersonation” during its examinations.
This comes after the case of trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar, who is under UPSC investigation for allegedly “faking her identity” to bypass Civil Service Exam appearance norms. Additionally, UPSC’s plan coincides with recent controversy over the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) handling of examinations, including the NEET-UG exam.
The UPSC has invited bids from PSUs for providing technological services during its examinations. The tender recently issued by the Commission includes services such as Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication (or Digital Fingerprint Capturing), facial recognition of candidates, QR code scanning of e-Admit Cards, and live AI-based CCTV surveillance.
The tender documents state that the UPSC will provide the exam schedule, detailed list of exam venues, and the number of candidates per venue to the technology service provider two to three weeks prior to the exams for on-site preparation. Additionally, candidate details (name, roll number, photo, etc.) will be provided seven days before the exam for use in fingerprint authentication and facial recognition.
The service provider will also deploy hand-held devices integrated with QR code scanners and adequate manpower at each examination centre. The QR code on the admit card will be scanned to automatically retrieve the candidate’s details from the UPSC-provided database.
