A University of Glasgow spinout company and its achievements have been recognised by the Scottish Parliament.

Nami Surgical recently scooped a Scottish EDGE Award of £80,000 to develop its miniaturised ultrasonic scalpel for robotic-assisted surgery.

The technology will allow surgeons to perform faster and safer robotic procedures, drastically improving patient outcomes.

On the back of the award, Glasgow Kelvin MSP Kaukab Stewart put down a motion in the parliament recognising the success.

And last week, Ms Stewart paid a visit to the facility within the University’s James Watt South Building where Nami Surgical is based.

She took the opportunity to present Nico Fenu and Rebecca Cleary with a copy of the motion and learn more about the company.

Ms Stewart said: “I was delighted to be invited along to meet with Nico and Rebecca from Nami Surgical.

“It is clear that they have both put in a lot of work to develop their miniaturised ultrasonic scalpel for robotic-assisted surgery, something that is supported by surgeons over the country.

“I am looking forward to hearing further about their work going forward.”

The motion reads: “That the Parliament congratulates Nico Fenu and Rebecca Cleary on receiving a Scottish EDGE Award of £80,000 to develop their business Nami Surgical Ltd.”

Nico said: “We were delighted to welcome to our local MSP to the University to see how we are developing our technology.

“We conducted a brief presentation, during which we discussed our miniaturised ultrasonic scalpels and their potential to enhance future surgical procedures and patient outcomes.

“She said she was impressed by our journey so far and we are delighted to have been recognised by the Scottish Parliament.”
