The union government has called on higher education institutes and standalone startup incubators to submit bids for enhancing the adoption of Bhashini, the natural language processing service. In a request-for-empanelment tender, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology stated that applicants must work towards increasing the use of the Bhashini platform across all Indian languages and regions. The IT ministry has set a submission deadline of July 10 for these bids.

The successful bidders will be expected to conduct research projects to improve machine translation accuracy and fluency for specific language pairs. Additionally, they should focus on developing domain-specific language models for sectors such as government, education, and healthcare, and participate in multilingual benchmarking initiatives to evaluate the progress of machine translation models for Indian languages. These institutes are also required to dedicate research efforts towards enhancing the capabilities of the Bhashini platform for under-resourced Indian languages with limited digital presence. They should explore collaborations with linguistic communities for data collection and annotation.

Renamed Bhashini in 2022, the National Language Translation Mission aims to create an ecosystem that supports real-time translation of local Indian languages by providing access to open-source databases and translation tools.
