The University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified 20 'fake' universities in India, with Delhi having the highest number of unrecognised institutes. Despite UGC's biannual release of the 'fake universities' list, new institutions continue to appear. UGC Secretary Manish Ratnakar Joshi stated that they notify state authorities and urge them to take action against these fraudulent institutions. The UGC Act 1956 defines the criteria for universities, and only those meeting these criteria can use the term 'university' in their names. Students are advised to verify a university's credentials before enrolling. Those who graduate from 'fake' institutes will not receive a recognised degree and may face difficulties in securing jobs
