The University Grants Commission (UGC) in India has asked the universities that students should be allowed to write exams in local languages, even if courses are offered in English. UGC Chairman, Jagadesh Kumar, made the announcement and said the move would help support teaching and learning in regional and local languages. He also highlighted the need to promote "writing textbooks in the mother tongue/local languages", and translating standard books from other languages.
