For far too long, the school-to-prison pipeline has been a scourge on our justice system. The problem is rampant and it’s time to take action.

In the U.S., there are over 2.3 million students currently incarcerated, which is more than the combined population of New York City and Los Angeles. This staggering number is largely due to the school-to-prison pipeline.

The school-to-prison pipeline is a process by which children are funneled into the criminal justice system. This process begins with school disciplinary problems, which can often be resolved with appropriate discipline. However, if those problems aren’t resolved, students are more likely to fall into the hands of law enforcement. Once students are in detention or prison, they’re much more likely to commit crimes and end up in prison.

The school-to-prison pipeline is a problem because it leads to injustices. Students who are in detention or prison are often unable to receive an education, which can lead to lifelong consequences. Additionally, students who are incarcerated often have difficulty finding jobs after they’re released. This creates a cycle of poverty and criminal activity.

The school-to-prison pipeline needs to be shut down. We need to provide more resources to schools so that disciplinary problems can be resolved without leading to criminal justice involvement. Additionally, we need to provide more resources to law enforcement so that students who are arrested can be properly processed and returned to their families or schools.

The school-to-prison pipeline is a problem that needs to be addressed. We need to take action and shut it down.
