An increase in competition leads to pressure and fear of performance in sports. The word “pressure” is everywhere in sports news. Athletes under pressure cannot perform well. Thus, when it matters the most they underperform. If one understands the process of pressure, he/she can equip them to perform well in the critical moments of competition.

Why do athletes feel pressure?

Pressure gets built up on its own. It manifests physically through adrenaline rush, breathing, heart rate, etc, mentally through positive and negative thoughts, and emotionally through fear, anxiety, etc.

How pressure is created in sports?

Let us now understand how pressure is created in sports. The sporting event has no role to play in building pressure. It is all internal that is created by the athletes. Sometimes it is the mentors’ expectations too that build pressure. Pressure in sports also depends upon how athletes perceive a particular athletic event. This perception affects performance in sports. When an athlete fears the outcome this controls their performance and makes it difficult to take risks.

How can you as an athlete overcome pressure?

It is important to understand that it is you who creates “pressure” for yourself. So it is only you who can disassemble the pressure.

Focus on the process and your job. Ask yourself, what is giving you pressure:

  •  Is it the game you want to win?
  •  Is it the trophy you want at hand?

Prioritize what you need to do at that moment. It is also significant to understand your expectations. What do you expect from yourself? Are you afraid of your expectations? Are you tensed to meet others’ expectations? Do not forget the purpose behind starting your sport. It is not just about competitions and performance. It also has a fun element that asks you to just enjoy the game as an athlete.

Tips to handle pressure in sports:

Sports are fun but when it comes to competition it may give an adrenaline rush. Having a healthy attitude towards sports is important and keeping calm during stress can help to perform best. The following tips can help to handle pressure:

  1. Take a deep breath: Practice deep breadth regularly. Hold on to your breath for 5 seconds and release it slowly. Try this exercise daily.
  2. Relaxing muscles: Flex a group of muscles tightly for 5 seconds and release it. Then you can focus on another set of muscles.
  3. Think about a calm place: Imagine yourself in a beautiful place and let the stress flow away from your body.
  4. Focus on the present: Do not worry about your past or future but focus on the present.
  5. Follow a routine: Having a routine will help to keep stress in control. Focus on your routine.
  6. Positive thinking: Do not let negative thinking bother you. Always tell yourself that you can learn from mistakes, you are in control of your mind.
  7. Imagine success: Think about scoring a goal and you will able to handle stress better.
  8. Eat well: When you have to perform you should have proper food and sleep.
  9. Have fun: Indulge yourself in fun or relaxation. Hang out with friends, go for a bike ride, watch a movie, etc.

Sports help you to stay active. It is important to have fun whether you play for a competition or just on weekends. This will help you keep stress at bay.
