Summer Samurai Camp, The doors of government schools might have shut for summer holidays, but a window of opportunities and exposure has just opened up for the underprivileged students.
If it is not for the efforts of the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions (TSWREIS) Society, a pair of teenagers studying in social welfare educational institutions wouldn’t have made the national headlines by climbing the Mt Everest year.
RS Praveen Kumar, an IPS officer, who is the Secretary of the TSWEI Society, is the man behind the awe-inspiring story of the 13-year-old Malavath Purna of Nizamabad and 17-year-old S Anand Kumar of Khammam, who climbed the Earth’s highest mountain.
His brainchild “Summer Samurai”, which lick started on Friday, will provide a wide range of programs that help 10,000 odd students from across the ten districts of Telangana to learn the life skills and nuances of life. The program not only helps the students learn many a thing but also envisage setting their life goal even before they were grown up.
Summer Samurai Training to Students:
Imparting academic skills and inculcating interest in sports, it ends on May 10. With an objective to improve academic skills and soft skills among Dalit students, the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS) is organizing a summer camp titled ‘Summer Samurai’ for the third time in Telangana State.
The 15-day camp being held at Social Welfare schools has more than 15,000 students from all over the State participating in the 21 camps across Telangana. This year, the participants included tribal students and BC Welfare students. The camp would conclude on May 10. An initiative of TGSWREIS Secretary Dr. RS Praveen Kumar launched in the summer of 2014, the camp provides training in improving academic skills, along with sports.
This includes horse riding, boating, swimming, hockey, chess, table-tennis, athletics, gymnastics and martial arts. Young Leader Camp to improve the leadership qualities in students is yet another valuable training available for the participating students. For girls, a special training initiative ‘Voice for Girls’ is being held with the help of an American NGO that talks to the students on problems of teenage girls and also works on developing leadership qualities in girls.
Speaking about the camp, RS Praveen Kumar thanked the State government for its support to the initiative. He said, “The children come from such poor background that when they go back they may have to take up some small work to earn daily wages.” The camp not only gives them a good experience of summer holidays but also lets them understand the challenges in the changing world. Summer Samurai Camp A New Innovative Initiative:
This camp has been inaugurated and the summer camp organized at 31 different venues across Telangana in more than 10 disciplines. The Society made hectic arrangements for the Summer Samurai, in which students from 134 social welfare schools and junior colleges will take part in different programs. The authorities selected 27 venues in and around Hyderabad to facilitate training to students.
The Society has also lined up a few projects to those not attending the camp. Those students during this summer should try to educate their parents, grandparents, and others, The principals of all the institutions in Warangal and Khammam will also visit these students home to encourage them. Exclusive summer camps on film-making, robotics, music, maths, and other courses are being rolled out by the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS) for their students. The camp is named ‘Summer Samurai’ drawing inspiration from the life of Samurai, the Japanese warrior, who fought against all odds to emerge as an invincible winner. ‘Voice 4 Girls’, a unique workshop for girls, will also be a part of the program.
The training programs include Swaero Stars, an intensive theatre workshop -cum-film acting camp, The participants will be trained in different aspects of film acting and theatre arts, arts and crafts which covers a wide range of subjects for young artists, future sculptors, bookmakers, potential puppeteers and more.
Young Leaders, where children will be taught of characteristics that help one to be a great leader. Young Journalist, to bring awareness among the students about creative writing and creating a pool of qualified professionals, Hyderabad based NGO, VOICE 4 Girls, will teach the girls the necessary life skills, basic health, and hygiene, self-awareness, safety, rights, future planning,
And empower the girls on critical information they need to take charge of their own life.Swaero Tech, Abacus, Vedic Maths, Swaero for Swaero, English Speaking and Swaero Champs are other programs are going to be conducted in the Summer Samurai Program,
The hands-on experience which the students get in the camp would help them develop their skills. A host of skilled professionals from various streams from US, Kenya, Brazil, and other places are voluntarily coming to share their knowledge with the children, according to the RS Praveen Kumar.

Stars on the rise: Being encouraged by the success of film making summer camp 2014 and with a view to introducing the magic world of movies, theatre arts and dramatics to another group of young Swaeroes an intensive theatre workshop cum film acting camp is being held during the summer. The participants will be trained in different aspects of film acting and theatre arts.
Art and Crafts Camp:
Arts Camp: Towards enriching creativity and vitality. Arts and crafts are fun for children and to the young-at-heart! which covers a wide range of subjects for young artists, future sculptors, bookmakers, potential puppeteers and more. To peep into the world of creative writing and to bring awareness among the students regarding the innumerable opportunities in this field Young Journalists’ camps are organized from 1st to 10th May for boys and girls thus hoping to create a pool of qualified professionals from the disadvantaged sections. These camps also enhance students’ writing and communication skills.

To introduce our students to the world of music- ‘SWARA 4 Swaeroes’ basic training in western and Indian music (vocal and instrumental) is being organized for a group of selected students during summer.
