Teaching Students About the Size of the Mustard Seed

As a teacher, it is important to find creative ways to educate students about important life lessons. One lesson that can be difficult to teach is that the size of something does not determine its significance. This can be demonstrated through the illustration of a mustard seed.

In the Bible, a mustard seed is mentioned as being one of the smallest seeds, yet it grows into one of the largest plants. This analogy can be used in the classroom to teach students that even the smallest actions can have a significant impact on their lives and the world around them.

One way to teach this lesson is through a hands-on activity. Begin by showing a jar of mustard seeds to the class and ask them to estimate the number of seeds in the jar. After they have made their guesses, count the seeds together as a class. This will give them a visual representation of just how small a mustard seed is.

Next, ask the students to brainstorm small actions they can take that could have a significant impact on themselves or others. Encourage them to think creatively, such as writing a thank-you note to a teacher or picking up litter on the playground.

Once they have come up with a list, have each student write their action on a paper cut-out of a mustard seed. Then, as a class, display the mustard seed cut-outs on a poster or bulletin board titled “Small Seeds, Big Impact.”

Throughout the school year, remind students of the lesson through this display. Encourage them to continue taking small actions that can make a big impact on themselves, their classmates, and their community.

In addition to this activity, sharing stories of individuals who made a significant impact through small actions can also help reinforce the lesson. For example, Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat on the bus sparked the Civil Rights Movement, or the founder of TOMS Shoes who started giving away a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair sold.
