Animal Pole

The animal pole is the region of the egg or ovum that forms the embryo’s anterior (head) end of animals. It contains the essential components necessary for early embryonic development to take place. Since the animal pole contains most of the cytoplasm, which is rich in proteins, it provides a rapid source of energy to developing cells. During fertilization, animal pole sperm accesses the egg’s animal pole, while the vegetal pole sperm penetrates the egg through the vegetal pole.

The animal pole is found in eggs of birds, fish, reptiles, insects, and mammals. For example, in the case of the frog egg, the animal pole is the region opposite the black-pigmented vegetal pole, and its first division leads to the formation of the blastomere that later becomes the embryo’s head.

Vegetal Pole

The vegetal pole is the region of the egg or ovum opposite to the animal pole, which contains yolk-filled cells that provide nutrients required for the growing embryo. Cells situated near the vegetal pole differentiation into endoderm, which accounts for the gastrulation process, specifically involving the formation of gut during embryonic development.

The vegetal pole usually does not contain excess cytoplasm required for early development compared to the animal pole and is therefore often the site of gastrulation. In some invertebrates that undergo spiral cleavage during embryonic development, the vegetal pole’s cells divide slower than the animal pole, making it the primary site for gastrulation.
