Teaching Students About February

February is the shortest month of the year, but it’s filled with important days to teach students about. In this article, we’ll explore six significant February days, and provide ideas for how teachers can incorporate them into their lessons.

1. Groundhog Day (February 2nd)

Groundhog Day originated in Pennsylvania and celebrates the belief that if a groundhog sees its shadow on this day, there will be six more weeks of winter. Teach students about the history and traditions of Groundhog Day, and encourage them to make their own predictions about whether or not spring will arrive early.

Activity Idea: Use a stuffed animal or toy groundhog to create a “shadow” experiment. Shine a flashlight on the groundhog and see if it appears to cast a shadow. Then, take the groundhog outside and observe if it sees its shadow in natural light.

2. National Freedom Day (February 1st)

National Freedom Day commemorates President Lincoln’s signing of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery. Teach students about the history of slavery in the United States, and how the 13th Amendment changed our country.

Encourage students to reflect on what freedom means to them.
Activity Idea: Have students create their own definition of freedom, and then create a class mural or collage to display their ideas.

3. Valentine’s Day (February 14th)

Valentine’s Day is a holiday dedicated to love and affection. Teach students about the history and traditions associated with the day, which can be a fun way to explore cultural differences and similarities.

Activity Idea: Have students create their own Valentine’s Day cards or crafts, and encourage them to think about how they can express kindness and love to others in their lives.

4. Presidents Day (Third Monday in February)

Presidents Day is a holiday dedicated to celebrating the nation’s presidents. Teach students about the history and significance of the holiday, and provide opportunities for them to learn about different presidents and their accomplishments.

Activity Idea: Have students choose a president to research and create a presentation about, or create a class timeline displaying the accomplishments of different presidents.

5. Black History Month

February is also Black History Month, which is an important opportunity to teach students about the contributions and accomplishments of Black Americans throughout history. Encourage students to think critically about issues of racial justice and equality.
