Supreme Court launches neutral citation system for easy identification, citation of orders

The Supreme Court on Wednesday launched the Neutral Citation System to implement a uniform, reliable and secure methodology for identifying and citing judgments and orders.

The system is being launched in a phased manner. Phase-I shall cover the judgments and orders pronounced during the period between April 1, 2014 to July 5, 2023 and July 6, 2023 onwards.

The judgments and orders for the above mentioned period shall bear a neutral citation number and quick response (QR) code on top left corner of the first page of such judgment or order.

The first four numeric characters shall represent the year of pronouncement of judgment, order while the abbreviation stand for the relevant court.

The numeric character at the end of the citation number shall indicate the seriatim number of the judgment, order.
