In order to bring more transparency in the working of the Collegium system, the research wing of the Supreme Court, the Centre for Research and Planning (CRP), will assist the Permanent Secretariat of the Supreme Court Collegium.
This announcement was made by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on April 11, during the felicitation function of eight judges, who were recently appointed to the Supreme Court, organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association.
The CJI said the CRP merging its activities with the Permanent Secretariat would bring more objectivity in the decision-making process of the Collegium.
He further said that he has asked the research wing to collect data on top 50 High Court judges in terms of seniority, relating to the number of orders passed by them, along with the number of reportable judgments delivered.
As per the CJI, the Centre for Research and Planning had some extraordinarily talented young people. Conceptualised by the then CJI T.S. Thakur, CRP currently comprised two officers posted in the Registry on deputation.
While one of them was a judicial officer from Punjab and Haryana judiciary, the other one was his former law clerk, who went to the Harvard Law School for LLM, and then was teaching at Jindal Global Law School, revealed CJI Chandrachud.
