Impact of Extra-Curricular Activities on Student Behaviour and Academic Success
Aristotle said,” The quality of life is determined by its activities.” I would like to requote the quality of school life is determined by the range of extracurricular activities. A student comes to school not to merely acquire knowledge but to get moulded to be a complete individual. To build self-confidence, communication, interpersonal skills, intrapersonal skill, social skills, emotional skills, and leadership qualities; it is imperative for students to participate in various activities. At Spring Mount Public School, our activity calendar is planned carefully to nurture and foster students to be the future citizens of the world. We give equal importance to sports, academics, and co-curricular activities. Our students get sufficient time to choose a sport and take up the training programme while they are at school. Swimming and Yoga are introduced for all students as a way of life. Apart from these, they can choose any one sport from a wide range of options like Football, Cricket, Skating, Tennis, Basketball, Table tennis, Silambam, and Athletics to mention a few. Once students choose a sport, we not only provide the training but also ensure enough exposure is given to hone their skills in terms of Inter and Intra School Competitions. As against popular belief that these would be distractors, we have found that students perform well in academics as a matter of fact.
Art education should be an integral part of all school curriculum. Today’s world needs problem solvers and creative thinkers more than successful individuals. Art gives students a chance to express themselves to the world and build on their self-image. We have introduced different genres of art in the form of Sculpting, Painting, Pottery, Graphic Designing, Theatre, Music, and Dance. Art integration is a way of teaching and learning at Spring Mount Public School. The school has a beautiful campus with several mural works, paintings, and installations made by students. Every fortnight our students carry artwork at home to beautify their living spaces. Various art competitions like Photography competition, Science sculptures, and best out of waste are held to mention a few. Students are given the opportunity to participate in Inter school and Intra school competitions to build on their skills.
Our education system is deeply rooted in culture. We ensure that students are a part of all festival celebrations. The festivals are celebrated in their true traditional and spiritual sense. We build a sense of pride in our culture and national integrity through these celebrations. Our assemblies are learning opportunities for students to present their creative ideas, showcase their talent, gain knowledge on interesting topics and create awareness. We develop public speaking skills and communication skills through these activities. Our aim is to ensure that each student is able to grow and achieve better personally, and professionally through extra-curricular activities.
