Expressing solidarity with Virender Kumar Narwal, a practising lawyer of Dwarka who was shot dead on April 1, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) sought a fair and expeditious investigation by the Investigating Authority into the death case, besides passing of the Advocates Protection Bill, 2021.
Condemning the broad daylight murder, the Executive Committee of SCBA on Wednesday said that lawyers have been an integral part of the society.
If those protecting the rule of law would be attacked in such a manner, it would shatter the confidence of public at large, noted the Association.
It sought constitution of an SIT to probe the incident, in case the need arises.
Stating that Advocates were vulnerable sections of the society having no social security, the SCBA further sought passing of the Advocates Protection Bill, 2021, which has been pending before the Parliament for around two years.
It said the enforcement of the Act would ensure the safety and security of lawyers by way of providing police protection in certain cases, forming a redressal committee for advocates at each level of judiciary, besides protecting the advocates from illegal arrests and malicious prosecutions.
It would further ensure waiving of bail bonds for lawyers, providing extended protection in cases of privileged communications with clients, along with insurance and financial aids, apart from sanctioning loans to the advocates.
