Rice University Introduces Tai Chi Sessions as Part of Wellness Wednesdays

Rice University’s President’s Office, the Rice Recreation Employee Well-Being Team and campus leadership kicked off the inaugural Wellness Wednesdays this week. The initiative is dedicated to faculty and staff well-being and focuses on a comprehensive approach to health and wellness, featuring many opportunities for employees to participate with university leaders in different ways.

“Paula and I have emphasized the importance of well-being at Rice and have shown our dedication by joining the first Stride Out Stress walk/run for faculty and staff,” said President Reginald DesRoches. “Wellness Wednesdays is a continuation of that effort and will provide faculty and staff with a monthly opportunity to exercise wellness.”

For the first Wellness Wednesday, , interim assistant vice president of facilities, engineering and operations, led a 30-minute beginner tai chi wellness experience at the Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center, practicing controlled breathing, gentle stretches and a miniseries of slow-paced standing postures.

Throughout the academic year, sessions will be held once a month across campus. Additional sessions are planned for the following dates:

• Aug. 28, 2024
• Sept. 25, 2024
• Oct. 30, 2024
• Dec. 4, 2024
• Jan. 29, 2025
• Feb. 26, 2025
• March 26, 2025
• April 30, 2025
