Should Competitions be moderated in schools?

For educators across the globe this question could be pleasantly intriguing! Human species for eons together have survived this planet through Competition! “Survival of the fittest” is an accepted theory, which agrees that certain people become powerful in society because they are innately better.

Man is a superior being in comparison to several other species that occupy the face of this earth and what drives a man is ‘Challenges’! Undeniably the fact that has made human beings superior is the will and the compulsion to take on new challenges all through life! It is that one supreme motivational factor that catapults man to the levels of achievement that he is capable of! One could say ‘Competition’ is the ‘mantra’ for living life to the fullest! And therefore why would any educational institution want to deprive any student of this very innate characteristic!

Schools have the liberty to decide how much of Competition is necessary for students, however the fact of the matter is that even if this number is minimalistic, students will eventually face several levels of Competition later on in life!

Reqelford International School is a progressive school and believes in holding Healthy competitions for students be it in the field of Sports or Arts and Literary Activities or any other Academic related activities. Great care is taken in ensuring every competition is held fairly, with all those who compete or are pitted against each other being matched appropriately to give a realistic and more authentic picture. Most Students love to participate in competitions particularly when schools recognize not just the Winners but also the participants. As they compete more, they realize it is not always about winning but it is more about being able to give it your best shot – it is about viewing any Competition as a Fun game since you are largely competing with your own friends or peer group.

There is a lot that students learn through Competitions in Schools in particular skills needed for life – they learn to be resilient, to be team players, to respect their peers and respect diversity in thought and action, to overcome their fears and insecurities and most importantly to develop a progressive growth mindset. They realize that in life it is not about competing with others but in competing with their own selves. Yes, it remains to be seen whether all schools exercise caution when holding Competitions. Competitions should never be viewed by students as a Stress building factor or something that brings about a traumatic experience. Frequent trainings and Capacity Building Programmes for all the facilitators and mentors in school will ensure a healthy feel to any competition that is conducted – it will sensitize educators towards student thought processes and urge them to handle these situations with great care! Competitions can sometimes turn intense or aggressive, however if educators are trained well in guiding and counselling students and in showing them how to handle such situations, students will be better prepared to take on their future.
