1 Reliance Industries ranked 86th in the Fortune Global 500 list
Reliance Industries Limited has been ranked 86th in this year’s Fortune Global 500 list . Its position has improved by two places compared to last year. American company Walmart has remained at the top for the 11th consecutive year. At the same time, Amazon remained in second place. Reliance Industries was ranked 88th last year. In three years, it has jumped 69 places in the list. Reliance was ranked 155th in the year 2021. The company’s revenue last year was $ 108.8 billion, while the profit was $ 8.4 billion. In 2023, only eight Indian companies were included in this list. HDFC Bank has been included in the Fortune Global-500 list for the first time this year. Companies are ranked in the Fortune Global 500 on the basis of total revenue for the financial year ending on or before March 31, 2024. Nine Indian companies feature in this year’s Fortune Global 500 rankings, including five public sector companies. Insurance major Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) climbed 12 spots to 95th position in the 2024 list. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) slipped 22 spots to 116th. State Bank of India climbed 57 spots to 178th. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited slipped 22 and 25 spots to 180th and 258th positions respectively. Tata Motors moved up 66 spots to 271st, while HDFC Bank was 306th and Rajesh Exports was 463rd on the list.
2 Kamala Harris officially becomes Democratic presidential candidate
Vice President Kamala Harris has officially secured the presidential nomination from the Democratic Party . The Democratic Party officially announced this on August 6. 59-year-old Harris has also become the first Indian-American to become a presidential candidate from the Republican or Democratic Party . She will face former President and Republican Party candidate Donald Trump in the general election to be held in November. On August 2, Harris was declared the ruling Democratic Party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election. Last month, President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race in the upcoming election, after which she was declared the presidential candidate.
3 BSF’s first women mountaineering team left from Delhi to climb Mount Mukut Purva in Uttarakhand
Additional Director General (Operations) of Border Security Force (BSF) Anurag Garg flagged off the first women mountaineering team from New Delhi for the expedition to Mount Mukut Purva in Uttarakhand . This team of 12 women mountaineers will climb the 23,392 feet high Mukut Purva peak and hoist the national and Border Security Force flags there.
4 BIMSTEC Business Summit held in New Delhi
The BIMSTEC Business Summit was held in New Delhi . The aim of this summit, which will run till August 8, is to strengthen regional and economic cooperation among the members of the group of 7 countries . The summit is being hosted by the Ministry of External Affairs in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). . Seven countries of Asia are members of BIMSTEC. It includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka from South Asia and two countries of South East Asia, Myanmar and Thailand.
5 Piyush Goyal launches ‘India@100’: A vision for India’s economic future
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal unveiled a landmark publication that projects India’s economic progress till 2047. The Union minister was speaking at the ASSOCHAM launch of the book ” India@100: Envisioning Tomorrow’s Economic Powerhouse ” written by former chief economic adviser K V Subramanian . In the book, Subramanian has predicted that India could become a $55 trillion economy by 2047 if the country maintains an annual growth rate of 8 per cent.
6 Ind-Ra raises GDP growth forecast for FY25 to 7.5%
India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) has raised its forecast for India’s GDP growth in FY25 to 7.5% from the previous estimate of 7.1%. This revised estimate is higher than the RBI’s forecast of 7.2% and the Finance Ministry’s Economic Survey’s estimate of 6.5-7%. The growth is attributed to an expected improvement in consumption demand driven by government policies and increased capital expenditure.
7 Paris Olympics 2024: Manu Bhaker will be the flag bearer for India in the closing ceremony
Manu Bhaker, two-time Olympic medalist and India’s star shooter at the Paris Olympics, will be the country’s flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the Olympics . The male flag bearer will be selected later. Manu Bhaker topped the medal tally for India at the current Olympics by finishing third in the women’s individual 10m air pistol event, making her the first female shooter to win an Olympic medal for India. After that, Sarabjot Singh and Bhaker won the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol (mixed team) event, which was India’s first shooting team and Bhaker’s second medal. Bhaker is the first athlete from the Indian contingent to win two medals in the same edition of the Paris Olympics after independence. Earlier in the 1900 Olympics, Norman Pritchard won two medals representing India, both silver medals in 200m and 200m hurdles.
8 Vinesh Phogat created history, reached the finals by defeating Cuban wrestler in the semi-finals
India’s star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has created history in Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh has made it to the finals by defeating Cuban wrestler Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals of 50 kg freestyle wrestling . Earlier, in the quarter-final match played on Tuesday, Vinesh Phogat defeated Ukraine’s Uskana Livach 7-5. With the victory in the semi-finals, Vinesh’s silver medal has been confirmed. In this way, Vinesh has become the second female wrestler to win a medal in the Olympics. Earlier, Sakshi Malik had won the bronze medal for India in women’s wrestling. If Vinesh manages to win in the final, she will not only become the first female wrestler to win a gold medal in Olympic history but also the first Indian female athlete.
9 Hiroshima Day 2024
Hiroshima Day is observed every year on August 6 to promote the politics of peace and raise awareness about the effects of the bomb attack on Hiroshima. Hiroshima city was attacked with a nuclear weapon which killed thousands of people instantly on August 6, 1945. The US made two nuclear bombs named ‘ The Little Boy ‘ dropped on Hiroshima city and ‘ The Fat Man ‘ on Nagasaki city on August 6 and 9 respectively . Hiroshima was known as an industrial city of Japan until August 6, 1945.
