Schools in Puducherry for classes 1 to 8 have declared a holiday today due to a bandh called by the INDIA alliance protesting against the recent power tariff hike. Classes for standards 9 to 12 will continue as scheduled.
The power tariff in Puducherry has been increased annually starting from April 1. However, the announcement of the tariff increase was delayed due to the parliamentary election schedule. The new electricity rates came into effect on June 16.
The power tariff increase, has led to household electricity charges rising by 40 to 75 paise per unit. For instance, the rate for the first 100 units went up from Rs 2.25 to Rs 2.70, while charges for 101-200 units increased from Rs 3.25 to Rs 4. Electric vehicle charging stations also saw a rise, with rates now at Rs 5.75 per unit, up from Rs 5.33.
