Aligarh : The Department of Physical Education, Aligarh Muslim University organized a session on June 13 with Prof Sharmishta Banarjee from the Department of Management, University of Calcutta. The session focused on the topic of “Sports as a Career for Women: Impetus and Impediments,” highlighting the existing disparities in women’s sports and discussing potential career options for female athletes.

This visit was made possible through the collaboration between the University of Calcutta and Aligarh Muslim University, as part of a data collection project sponsored by the National Women’s Commission of India. The project aimed to collect data from various cohorts, with Aligarh serving as one such cohort. To ensure a diverse sample, contact was established with women players from different districts, states, and national levels, through sports leaders in the city such as Dr. Shahnawaz Khan, Dr. Fuzail Ahmad, Dr. Nazia Khan, Mr. Riyaz, and Mr. Shamshad Nisar Azami. The survey was administered with the assistance of research scholars Abdul Majeed, Lokesh Raghav, and Danveer Singh from the Department of Physical Education. A total of 42 girls from Aligarh participated in the national survey, where they were informed about various career options available in and through sports.

Prof Sharmishta Banarjee expressed her satisfaction with the outcomes of the project and expressed her interest in future visits and collaborations with the department.

Chairman of the Department Prof Syed Tariq Murtaza expressed gratitude in his vote of thanks and Dr Sayed Khurram Nisar extended welcome to Prof Banarjee .
