cu-20230524094748.jpg

Recent research shows the drying trend of more than 30 large lakes in India from 1992 to 2020 . 16 of these lakes are major lakes in South India. These include Mettur (Tamil Nadu), Krishnarajasagar (Karnataka), Nagarjuna Sagar (located between Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh state and Nalgonda district of Telangana state) and Idamalayar (Kerala). This research suggests that the recent drought could be a possible factor for the decline in water holding capacity of reservoirs in South India. The lakes, which cover 3% of the total global land area, play an important role in regulating climate through carbon cycling. Despite their importance, lakes are often not well managed and receive less attention than rivers. Satellite observations have documented a loss of 90,000 square kilometers of permanent water area globally, but the underlying factors behind this loss are unclear. A recent study shows that 53% of the world’s largest lakes are losing water, While there has been an increase in 24%. About 33% of the global population lives in large, dry lake basins. A more pronounced drying trend has been observed in Arctic lakes and this suggests that climate change, along with human water consumption, plays a significant role in these changes. Understanding the factors causing lake water decline, such as temperature, precipitation, runoff, and human consumption, is essential for effective lake management and to recognize their importance in maintaining societies and water supplies around the world.
