1 President Draupadi Murmu was awarded Fiji’s highest civilian honour ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji’.
President Draupadi Murmu has reached Fiji ‘s capital Suva . There she was welcomed by Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka . The Fijian army gave a guard of honour to President Murmu. The President later inspected the guard of honour. This is the first visit of an Indian President to Fiji . President Draupadi Murmu was honoured with Fiji’s highest civilian honour ‘ Companion of the Order of Fiji ‘.
2 Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh
After the anti-reservation movement in Bangladesh turned violent , PM Sheikh Hasina has resigned on Monday, 5 August . Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman confirmed this. Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman said that now the army will form the interim government. So far, about 300 people, including 14 policemen, have lost their lives in the violence that broke out between the protesters and the supporters of the ruling party. Thousands of people have been injured in the violence. An indefinite curfew has been imposed all over Bangladesh. There is an atmosphere of chaos all around due to the ongoing violent protests against reservation in Bangladesh.
3 Ujjain has been registered in the Guinness Book for the highest number of people playing Damru
A world record was made in Ujjain on the third Monday of Sawan , 5 August. 1500 people played Damru together for 10 minutes on Shakti Path near Mahakal Lok . With this, Ujjain’s name was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest number of people playing Damru . Earlier, the record of 488 people playing Damru together was registered in the name of Federation of New York in 2021. For this, practice was going on in two sessions for the last three days. Today, separate teams of 25-25 Damru players were formed. This grand 15-minute event was held on the banks of Shipra River on the tune of 1500 Damru and Bhasma Aarti. Guinness World Records is a reference book published every year, which compiles world records. Till 2000, it was known as ‘Guinness Book of Records’. This book has created a record as the ‘best selling copyright book’.
4 Communications Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya released four commemorative postage stamps celebrating the 33rd Olympic Games
Communications Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya released a set of four commemorative postage stamps to celebrate the ongoing 33rd Olympic Games in Paris . The event was held in New Delhi. 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team medalist Sarabjot Singh, steeplechase athlete Sudha Singh and former cricketer Aakash Chopra also attended the event. The stamps are of sports like javelin throw, field hockey, sailing and table tennis. India Post released a souvenir card on XXXIII Olympics Paris 2024 on 05.08.2024. The souvenir card contains 4 stamps of Rs.5 denomination.
5 Jharkhand government started Chief Minister Mainiya Samman Yojana
The Hemant Soren government of Jharkhand has launched the Chief Minister Mainiya Samman Yojana to provide financial assistance to eligible women in the state . The scheme will be officially launched by Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on 16 August 2024. The term of the 81-member current Jharkhand Legislative Assembly will end on 5 January 2025 and elections for the new Legislative Assembly will be held in Jharkhand in November/December 2024. Keeping in mind the upcoming assembly elections, the Soren government has launched this scheme for the women category. Mukhyamantri Mainiya Samman Yojana is a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme where eligible women beneficiaries will get Rs 1000 per month directly in the bank account from the state government . The first installment will be transferred to the beneficiary’s account by Chief Minister Hemant Soren and State Women and Child Development Minister Baby Devi on August 16, 2024.
6 Novak Djokovic became the 5th Golden Slam winner
Serbian legend Novak Djokovic completed the Golden Slam of tennis on Sunday, 4 August . In tennis , the person who wins all four Grand Slams and Olympic Gold is considered a Golden Slam winner. Djokovic became the 5th player to do so . Before him, only Spain’s Rafael Nadal, America’s Serena Williams, America’s Andre Agassi and Germany’s Steffi Graf have won the Career Grand Slam. This is the first Olympic gold of Djokovic’s career. Djokovic won both sets in the tie-breaker round. The men’s singles gold medal match was played at Roland Garros Court in Paris. Djokovic has previously won 24 Grand Slams and won the first Grand Slam in 2008. There are 4 Grand Slams in tennis – these include the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the Wimbledon final last month. Alcaraz also won the 2023 Wimbledon by defeating Djokovic.
7 Indian Organ Donation Day
Indian Organ Donation Day is celebrated every year from 3rd August 2023 to commemorate India’s first successful deceased-donor heart transplant on 3rd August 1994. Indian Organ Donation Day also aims to dispel myths and misconceptions about organ donation and motivate and encourage people to donate organs and tissues after death. Indian Organ Donation Day is being celebrated in the country since 2010. Earlier Indian Organ Donation Day was celebrated every year on 27th November. In 2022, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization decided to celebrate Indian Organ Donation Day on 3rd August every year. Thus, from 2023, Indian Organ Donation Day is celebrated on 3rd August. 3rd August was chosen because the first deceased donor heart transplant was successfully performed in India on 3rd August 1994. The heart of a brain stem deceased person was donated by his family member which was successfully transplanted into another patient. Thus this day encourages people to take a pledge to donate their organs after death.
8 Former England batsman Graham Thorpe passed away
Former England batsman Graham Thorpe passed away on 5 August. He was 55 years old. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) gave this information. Graham Thorpe played 100 Tests and 82 ODIs in his career . Graham Thorpe scored 6744 Test runs in 100 Tests at an average of 44.66, including 16 centuries and 39 half-centuries. Thorpe scored 2380 runs in 82 ODIs for England at an average of 37.18. Thorpe scored 21 half-centuries in ODIs. The batsman played county cricket for Surrey and scored nearly 20,000 runs for the team. Thorpe also served as the batting coach of the English team. In the year 2022, Thorpe was made the head coach of the Afghanistan team, however fell seriously ill shortly after.
9 India and Saint Christopher and Nevis sign MoU for mutual Cooperation in the field of sports
Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Hon’ble Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India held discussions with Dr. Denzil Douglas, Hon’ble Minister of Foreign Affairs, Government of the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis on various areas of mutual cooperation in the field of sports. The key areas of cooperation under this MoU are: a. Training and competition of sportspersons and athletic teams, b. Training and technical assistance for coaches, c. Exchange programmes and visits of sports stalwarts, officials, sports administrators, professionals, technicians and sports support personnel, d. Exchange of youth/juniors in various sports including badminton, shooting, wrestling, kabaddi and athletics, e. Training, exchange and engagement programmes for sports science personnel and other development assistance in sports science, f. 10 National Commission for Women inaugurated Digital Shakti Kendra under Digital Shakti Abhiyan for Women in New Delhi
The National Commission for Women inaugurated the Digital Shakti Kendra in New Delhi under the Digital Shakti Abhiyan for women . The aim of this center is to raise awareness about cyber crimes . This center will provide technical support in filing complaints and their disposal. The Commission has said that in view of the increase in digital crimes, this initiative will help women to protect and empower themselves in the digital world. This center will ensure timely and effective resolution of cyber crime complaints. The Digital Shakti Kendra has been inaugurated by Ms. Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, in collaboration with Cyber Peace Foundation. Addressing the gathering during this time, Ms. Sharma said that there has been an increase in cases of cyber crime in India. In the year 2021, 52 thousand 9 hundred 74 cases related to cyber crime were registered in the country, which increased to 65 thousand 8 hundred 93 in the year 2022.
