PhD scholars and research associates across India have been waiting for a response from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) regarding a hike in fellowship since December 2022.

However, their wait has been in vain, leading to a nationwide unrest among research scholars. The All India Research Scholars Association (AIRSA) addressed a letter to DST officials in August 2022, demanding an immediate hike in fellowship. However, there has been no response from DST on this matter. As a result, scholars have started carrying out fresh rounds of protests, beginning from IIT Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University. In a recent update on Twitter, DST has shared that the issue of hike in fellowship is of utmost importance and is currently the top priority for the department. DST also stated that they are working on it and that the solution will be announced soon. However, scholars are demanding a concrete update regarding the percentages of the hikes for research scholars. AIRSA demanded in its August 2022 letter that fellowship rates should be revised automatically after every four years. This demand is based on the rising costs of living and inflation in the country. Scholars have been waiting for a concrete solution since then.
