, a member of the Women in Collective Cinema (WCC), recently spoke about how male-centered films aren’t just about market demand.

At an event in Kerala, she pointed out that, in an industry where 90% of films don’t do well financially, male actors shouldn’t be seen as the only reliable choice for success.

Padmapriya also shared a personal story from the set of a Tamil film, where a director slapped her. When she spoke up about it, she faced difficulties, including losing film offers, and the media blamed her instead of the director.

This discussion comes at a time when there’s more attention on issues of misogyny and abuse in the film industry, following the Justice Hema committee’s findings.

The director was banned from making films for six months after the incident, but Padmapriya stopped accepting Tamil film roles. She mentioned that before this, she had never had such a bad experience on set.
