Starting in 2025, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will no longer conduct recruitment exams and will focus exclusively on higher education entrance exams, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced on Tuesday, December 17.

This decision is part of a broader examination reform initiative prompted by alleged leaks in the NEET medical entrance exam and repeated cancellations of other exams due to similar issues. A high-level committee formed earlier this year proposed the changes, aiming to enhance the credibility and efficiency of examinations in India.

Discussions are currently underway between the Education and Health Ministries to decide whether exams like NEET will retain their pen-and-paper format or transition to a Computer-Based Test (CBT).

“NTA will be limited to conducting only entrance exams for higher education from next year,” Pradhan stated. He added that the NTA would undergo restructuring in 2025 to improve its operations, including the creation of at least ten new posts.

The Minister also reaffirmed that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) would continue to be held annually, with plans to incorporate advanced technology and computer-adaptive testing in the future.

“Our priority is zero-error testing,” Pradhan emphasized, noting that the reforms aim to eliminate vulnerabilities such as leaks and cybercrime.
