The apex regulator of medical education has fixed the academic calendar for all MBBS courses, with admission processes to be completed mandatorily by the end of August, according to recently released guidelines under the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023. Significantly, the regulations by the National Medical Commission (NMC) also do away with supplementary batches for those who fail their annual examination. Published in the gazette earlier this month, the regulations call for common counselling. However, according to officials in the know of the matter, this will not happen for the current batch of students as the preparations are still underway. R and the counselling is slated to begin in July. “A new software will be needed for conducting common counselling. This is under process at the moment. Other than that, dialogue is going on between the Health Ministry and the states to bring the entire counselling process onto the same platform,” said the official.
