As per the School Bag Policy 2020, School Education department aims to make learning more fun with various activities.

School education plays a vital role in fostering the overall growth and development of children. It is a known fact that children possess an innate ability to absorb knowledge effortlessly.

Their learning potential is maximized when they are provided with a stress-free and nurturing learning environment. Conversely, subjecting them to undue pressure hampers their enthusiasm and curiosity towards learning.

Therefore, it is imperative to create a classroom atmosphere that embraces their daily life experiences, voices, and inquisitive nature. By doing so, we can effectively build upon their existing knowledge and facilitate new learning opportunities.

No Bag Day on 4th Saturday of every month​


From field visits to museums, historical sites, gram panchayats to indoor activities such as science experiments, doodling, model assembly and model elections, learning in the schools will be more interesting, engaging and fun on the fourth Saturday of every month as part of the No Bag Day initiative.

Bagless day​


Making learning more fun with various activities besides reducing pressure and bag load on students, the School Education department has marked the fourth Saturday of every month as bagless day in all schools from this academic year.

10 bagless days​


The SCERT stands for State Council of Education Research and Training. It is a wing of the School Education department, has come out with a handout for 10 bagless days for Class 1 to 10 students.

From this academic year onwards, the school education department has directed the authorities to implement the fourth Saturday of every month as a no-bag day.

Concept of 10 Bagless Days​


All students from classes 1 to 10 will participate in 10-Bagless Days. Children will be given periodic exposure to indoor and outdoor activities inside and outside the school.

Which includes quizzes, doodling, experiments, visits to places/monuments of historical, cultural and tourist importance, meeting local artists and craftsmen and visits to higher educational institutions in their Village/ Mandal/ District/ State as decided by states and local communities.

This document covers all the important aspects and the activities of the implementation of the 10 Bagless Days in a systematic way.

According to the School Bag Policy 2020, it is recommended that students go to school without a bag for 10 days in a year. This will be implemented as a part of reducing the burden of the school bag so that there is no pressure on the students.

Objectives 10 Bagless Days​


The general objective of the 10 Bagless Days is to help the children to experience joyful learning with fun. In specific terms, the objectives of 10 Bagless Days are :

  • To build observation-based learning capacity and scope for practice. x Develop an understanding of the connectedness of community and interdependence.
  • Interdependence of classroom with theoretical as well as practical application.
  • To promote the dignity of labour through hands-on activity and existing local vocations like carpentry, electrical work, gardening, pottery etc.
  • To give exposure to possible career and higher education avenues.

Developing an Annual Work Plan​


Each school shall prepare an annual work plan of indoor and outdoor activities to properly implement the activities in the school. While preparing the annual work plan of the school, the following points will serve as guidelines:

i) While developing an annual work plan, all the subject teachers shall be involved. ii) If necessary, indoor and outdoor activities may be clubbed in a day

Pre-Activity: The teacher will plan pre-activities to be carried out prior to the activities. This will help the teacher and students to prepare themselves for carrying out the activities.

Post Activity: After the activities, the teacher may prepare an overall report of the activities with the students.

A suggestive format for developing an annual work plan is given below for the perusal and use. While preparing an annual work plan modifications as desired, may be made.

No Bag Day Handout PDF​


But SCERT has printed a special book i.e., No Bag Day Handout indicating what activities to do on this fourth Saturday. This book is designed for all students of class 1 to 10. There are 28 types of activities, and they are given the opportunity to use them according to their ability.

No Bag Day Activities​

  • Visits to museums, historical places, offices like village panchayats,
  • Science experiments,
  • Skits on girl child education,
  • Kite making,
  • Artificial intelligence,
  • Maths corner,
  • Maths rangoli,
  • Model elections,
  • Mock assembly,
  • Management of financial transactions,
  • Above said activity based learning will henceforth be mandatory in all types of schools in the state.

Primary section Section Activities​


As per this, there will be three sessions – show time, fun station and creative circle for the primary section. Class I and II students will be asked to speak about their family, imitate one of the family members and draw a sketch of a family member as part of these sessions which aim at developing communication skills and creativity.

As part of activity-based learning for Class III, IV and V students, a theme on livelihood has been designed where they will be asked to speak and act on the occupation they like besides drawing the tools used in the profession.

Secondary level Activities​


For the secondary level (Class 6 to 10) students, field visits, including a visit to post office, construction sites, ration shops, apart from family budget survey, model assembly model elections and financial transactions are among outdoor and indoor activities that have been made part of experiential learning. In all, there are 28 activity-based learning concepts for them.

The initiative is mainly aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, while exposing students to various work skills, helping them gain insights that enable them make to informed decisions on their future careers.

As part of the visit to post office, students will be asked to interview the postmaster and postman about their work. They will also be asked to interview householders about the services of the post office. Such visits give students experiential learning and they will get to know about various career opportunities..

The secondary school level students will also be introduced to the basics of artificial intelligence and its applications, and career opportunities.

10 Bagless Days every 4th Saturday​


In compliance with the guidelines outlined in the School Bag Policy 2020, the Department of School Education, Government of Telangana has issued a directive to observe 10 Bagless Days every 4th Saturday in the Academic Calendar for the years 2022-23 and 2023-24.

SCERT introduce this comprehensive activity module that aims to create captivating and dynamic learning experiences for students as part of the “No Bag Day” initiative.

This module represents a proactive measure taken by the Department of School Education, Government of Telangana, aligning with the School Bag Policy 2020, to alleviate the burden of heavy school bags on students and cultivate a healthy learning environment that fosters holistic development.

The primary objective behind implementing the “No Bag Day” initiative is to nurture the well-rounded growth of students, encompassing their physical, mental, and intellectual well-being.

On these designated days, students will be granted a break from their regular studies and instead engage in co-curricular activities that are closely aligned with the concepts taught in their subjects.

A groundbreaking element of this initiative is the “Bagless Program,” a ten-day program open to students from grades 1 to 10.

Throughout this program, students will have the invaluable opportunity to learn from and intern with local vocational experts, such as carpenters, gardeners, potters, and more.

Additionally, students will be encouraged to participate in a diverse range of activities, including visits to museums, historical sites, parks, and monuments.

This initiative aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, while exposing children to various vocational skills. Through this experience, students will gain insights that will assist them in making informed decisions regarding their future careers.

Teachers are advised to incorporate local elements and draw inspiration from the vibrant school environment, acknowledging the importance of a child’s home and community surroundings in fostering the assimilation of cultural values.

This activity module for the 10 Bagless Days serves as a comprehensive guide, offering a multitude of stimulating learning experiences such as projects, field visits, demonstrations, experiments, and role play.

Each activity within the module is designed to achieve specific Learning Outcomes (LOs) and foster skill development. Clear instructions are provided for Headmasters/ Principals, teachers, and students, ensuring that everyone involved in the learning process fully comprehends their roles and can maximize the benefits of the activities.

Furthermore, this module presents an excellent opportunity to assess students’ progress and explore potential career pathways.
