The Ministry of Education has released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023, today, 5th June at 11 am. Minister of State for Education and External Affairs, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh announced the rankings today. The rankings can be accessed on the official website of NIRF at

IIT Madras has once again topped the overall rankings. IISc Bengaluru has grabbed the “top university” spot this year, with JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia in the second and third spots. Indian Agricultural Research Institute has secured the top rank in agriculture and allied sectors, a category that has been introduced this year. IIM Ahmedabad has been ranked as the best management institute. The top college in the country is Miranda House, for the fourth time in a row.
According to the official website, the institutions are judged on several criteria. The parameters of the rankings include — Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.
The institutions are ranked in four categories: Overall, Colleges, Universities, and Research Institutions. The subject domains now consist of Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical, Architecture and Planning, Dental, and a new addition — Agriculture and Allied Sectors.
The NIRF was approved by the Ministry of Human Reseource Development, and was launched by the Minister of HRD on September 29, 2015. According to the NIRF Ranking 2022, IIT Madras had retained its position as the top college in India overall. It was followed by IISC Bangalore which was the best-ranking institute in research as well as in the university category.

Highlighting the growing participation of institutions in the rankings, Anil Kumar Nassa, member secretary of NBA (National Board of Accreditation), which prepares the NIRF, mentioned that in 2016, 3,500 institutes participated while 8,686 institutes took part this year. 7,254 applications were received last year. Anil Sahasrabuddhe, Chairman of NBA, added, “With 13 categories, this edition of NIRF is the largest in its scope to date.”
