For this, MoE is inviting applications through online mode from the school teachers from all states in India for honour with National Best Teacher Award 2024 to best teachers.

National Awards to Teachers 2024​


The National Awards to Teachers 2024 is an annual award given by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to recognize the outstanding contributions of teachers in primary, middle, and secondary schools across the country.

The awards are given on 5 September every year, which is Teachers’ Day in India. The awardees are presented with a medal, a citation, and a cash prize.

National Teacher Awards 2024​


The National Teacher Awards 2024 are a prestigious recognition of the hard work and dedication of teachers across India. They are a reminder of the important role that teachers play in shaping the lives of our children.

The MoE has announced that it is giving these awards to honor teachers who are striving to raise quality standards in school education. The national level jury would announce the final list after filtering the district, regional and state committees.

National Award for Teachers Application Form 2024​


The MoE is inviting online applications for the National Best Teacher Award (National Award to Teachers) from teachers and principals working in Government, Zilla Parishad, Mandala Parishad and Aided Schools.

The application process for the National Awards to Teachers 2024 is now open. Teachers can apply online through the Ministry of Education’s website.

(A) AICTE Nation Awards to Teachers 2024​


National Award To Teachers 2024 for teachers of ITI/ Polytechnic/ NSTI/ PMKVY/ Higher Education Institutions

a. Eligibility​


Experience- To be eligible for the award, higher education teachers should be a regular faculty member. They should have at least five years of full-time teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.

The award is only for higher education teachers, Vice-Chancellor or director, or principal (regular or officiating) are not eligible to apply for the same.

b. Age​


The nominee should not be above 55 years of age as of the last date of receiving the application for the awards.

AICTE National Awards to Teachers Categories​


The award has been divided into two categories:

  • Category 1- Teachers of ITIs and polytechnic institutes
  • Category 2- Teachers of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
    • Sub-category 1- Engineering and technology, architecture, any other.
    • Sub-category 2- Pure sciences including mathematics, physical sciences, biological sciences, chemical sciences, medicine, pharmacy, any other
    • Sub-category 3- Arts and social sciences, humanities, languages, legal studies, commerce, management, any other.

Nominations Invited from ITIs, Polytechnic Institutes​


The Ministry of Education has invited applications for the National Award to Teachers 2024. The award is for teachers of higher education. The last date to nominate the teachers for the awards is July 30, 2024.

The nomination window is open on the official portal, nat.aicte-india.org. The nomination of higher education teachers will be done by the head of the institution.

There are a total of 25 awards for ITI and diploma teachers. Meanwhile, 25 awards are for teachers of colleges and university teachers. The awardees will receive a medal, certificate, and a cash prize of Rs 50,000.

The National Awards to Teachers is organised to celebrate the contributions of teachers and to honour those who have improved the quality of school education and enriched the lives of their students through their commitment.

(B) MoE National Best Teacher Award 2024​


The purpose of National Award to Teachers or National Best Teacher Award 2024 is to celebrate the unique contribution of some of the finest teachers in the country and to honor those teachers who through their commitment and industry have not only improved the quality of school education but also enriched the lives of their students.

MoE National Awards to Teachers eligibility criteria​

  • The teacher must be a regular teacher or head of school with a minimum of 10 years of service.
  • The teacher must be working in a recognized primary, middle, or secondary school.
  • The teacher must have made outstanding contributions to the education of their students.
  • The teacher must be committed to the profession and have a positive impact on the lives of their students.

MoE National Award for Teachers Categories​


The awards are given in four categories:

  • National Award for Teachers: This is the highest award given to teachers, and is awarded to one teacher from each state and union territory.
  • National Award for Special Educators: This award is given to teachers who have made significant contributions to the education of children with special needs.
  • National Award for Teachers in Remote Areas: This award is given to teachers who have made outstanding contributions to the education of children in remote areas.
  • National Award for Teachers in Minority Schools: This award is given to teachers who have made outstanding contributions to the education of children in minority schools.

Selection Criteria for NAT​


The selection criteria for the awards include:

  • The teacher’s contribution to the overall quality of school education.
  • The teacher’s impact on the lives of their students.
  • The teacher’s commitment to the profession.
  • The teacher’s ability to motivate and inspire others.

The Organizations viz. Sainik Schools run by Ministry of Defence (MoD), Schools run by Atomic Energy Education Society (AEES), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Council for Indian Schools Certificate Examination (CISCE), Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) run by Ministry of Tribal Affairs may follow their internal processes for receiving nominations

National Teacher Awards 2024​


Recognising Teacher achievements in the field of education, the Union Education Ministry awards teachers every year and the President of India gives away the award during a ceremony on September 5, celebrated as Teachers’ Day.

The purpose of National Awards to Teachers is to celebrate the unique contribution of some of the finest teachers in the country and to honour those teachers who through their commitment and industry have not only improved the quality of school education but also enriched the lives of their students

National Awards to Teachers Eligibility​

  • School teachers and Heads of Schools working in recognized primary/middle/high/higher secondary schools under the following categories:
    • Schools run by State Govt./ UTs Administration, schools run by local bodies, schools aided by State Govt. and UT Administration.
    • Central Govt. Schools i.e. Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), Sainik Schools run by Ministry of Defence (MoD), Schools run by Atomic Energy Education Society (AEES).
    • Schools affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) (other than those at (a) and (b) above)
    • Schools affiliated to Council for Indian Schools Certificate Examination (CISCE) (Other than those at (a), (b) and (c) above)
  • Normally retired teachers are not eligible for the award but those teachers who have served a part of the calendar year (at least for four months i.e. up to 30th April in the year to which National Awards relate) may be considered if they fulfill all other conditions.
  • Educational Administrators, Inspectors of Education, and the staff of training Institutes are not eligible for these awards.
  • Teacher/ Headmaster should not have indulged in tuitions.
  • Only regular Teachers and Heads of Schools will be eligible.
  • Contractual Teachers and Shiksha Mitras will not be eligible.

Considerations To Guide The Selection Of Teachers At Various Levels:

Teachers will be evaluated based on the evaluation matrix given at Annexure-I. Evaluation matrix contains two types of criteria for evaluation:

(a) Objective criteria: Under this, the teachers will be awarded marks against each of the objective criteria. These criteria are given the weightage of 20 out of 100.

(b) Criteria based on performance: Under this, teachers will be awarded marks on criteria based on performance e.g. initiatives to improve learning outcomes, innovative experiments undertaken, organization of extra and co-curricular activities, use of Teaching Learning Material, social mobility, ensuring experiential learning, unique ways to ensure physical education to students etc. These criteria are given the weightage of 80 out of 100.

Procedure for application and selection:

(i) All the applications would be received through an online web portal. (ii) MHRD would ensure coordination with States/UTs regarding timely entry into the portal and resolution of technical and operational issues during data entry into the portal through the portal development agency.

iii) MHRD will bear the entire expenditure for development and maintenance of the portal.
iv) In case of State/UTs, teachers and heads of schools themselves shall apply directly by filling the application form online through the web portal before the prescribed cut-off date.

v) Every applicant shall submit a portfolio, online along with the Entry Form. The portfolio shall include relevant supporting material such as documents, tools, reports of activities, field visits, photographs, audios or videos etc.

vi)Undertaking by the applicant: Each applicant shall give an undertaking that all the information/data submitted is true to the best of his/her knowledge and if anything is found at any later date to be untrue then he/she will be liable to disciplinary action.

District Selection Committee

vii) First level scrutiny will be done by the District Selection Committee (DSC) headed by the District Education Officer. Members of DSC would be as under:

  • a) District Education Officer: Chairperson
  • b) Representative of State/UT Govt.: Member
  • c) One Reputed academician nominated by District Collector: Member
  • viii) The major functions to be performed by DSC are as under:
  • a) Physical verification of the facts/ information provided by the applicant by forming verification teams.
  • b) Evaluation/ marking of the applicants as per the format at Annexure-I.
  • c) Certificate by DSC: The DSC shall certify that marks have been awarded after due verification of the facts.
  • d) After the detailed evaluation of the applications, DSC will shortlist 3 names and forward these to State Selection Committee through online portal along with vigilance clearance certificate of each of the 3 applicants.
  • e) In addition to the applications received, the DSC in exceptional circumstances, may suo-moto consider name of maximum one person among the outstanding teachers including special educators and differently abled teachers/heads of schools. The evaluation will be done as per the format at Annexure-I.
  • f) DSC may take into account performance of teachers in various streams of studies viz. science, arts, music, physical education etc.

The State Selection Committee (SSC):

ix) The State Selection Committee (SSC) will be headed by Principal Secretary/ Secretary of State Education Department. Members of SSC will be as under:

  • a) Principal Secretary/ Secretary of State Education Department: Chairperson
  • b) Nominee of Union Govt.: Member
  • c) Director/Commissioner of Education: Member Secretary
  • d) Director, SCERT or equivalent if there is no SCERT: Member

x) The major functions to be performed by SSC are as under:

  • a) Re-verification of the facts/ information/marks of the nominations received from all the DSCs.
  • b) Evaluate all the nominations and prepare shortlist of the best candidates, subject to the maximum number allotted to the States/UTs and forward the same to Independent Jury at National level through the online portal.

Organization Selection Committee (OSC)(For other organizations)

xi) The composition of OSC is as under:
a) Chairperson/ Director/ Commissioner/ Head of the Organization: Chairperson
b) One officer from the Organization nominated by the Chairperson
c) Nominee of Union Govt.: Member
d) One reputed academician deputed by the Chairperson: Member

xii) The major functions to be performed by OSC are as under:
a) Organizations may follow their internal processes for receiving nominations.

  1. National Award to Teachers: Instituted in 1958, the National Award to Teachers are given away by the President of India on 5th September (Teacher’s Day) every year to give public recognition to meritorious teachers working in primary, middle and secondary schools. Altogether there are 374 awards out of which 20 awards are reserved for Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic teachers.

    Each State/Union Territory/Organization has an earmarked quota based on the number of teachers. The Scheme also covers teachers of the schools affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) including teachers of independent affiliated schools situated abroad, Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE), Sainik School, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), Central Tibetan School Administration (CTSA) and schools run by the Atomic Energy Education Society.

    From the award year 2001, ‘Special Awards’ have been instituted for teachers promoting inclusive education in schools and the education of children with disabilities in regular schools. The total number of ‘Special Awards’ is 43. ‘Special Awards’ are conferred on the teachers of the following categories:
    • Teachers with disabilities working in mainstream schools.
    • Special teacher or trained general teachers who have done outstanding work for Inclusive Education.

    The Government, from the Award Year 2004 has approved that one family member of the awardee teacher would also be treated as State Guests during their stay in Delhi for the function and their expenses would be borne by the Department.
