From July 1 to 2, 2024, Nanjing University held a work summary for the spring semester of 2024 and a work seminar for the autumn semester at Xianlin Campus, listening to the progress reports of the 19 plans of the “Forging Ahead” one by one, summarizing the school’s work in the first half of 2024, and in-depth discussions on key tasks in the second half of the year. Tan Tianniu, Secretary of the Party Committee of the University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tan Zhemin, President of the University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the meeting and delivered speeches.
Tan Tianniu pointed out that this meeting was effective and efficient. It not only reviewed and summarized the work of the past six months, but also reflected on future work. He said that since the first half of this year, our university has maintained a good momentum in enrollment, major projects and major platforms, open school, talent work, etc., and has achieved a series of remarkable results. He emphasized that as an important part of the national strategic scientific and technological force, Nanjing University is facing new challenges and new tasks. In line with the ardent expectations of General Secretary Xi Jinping and the Party Central Committee, we are in the process of deepening the “Forging Ahead Action” and accelerating the construction of the “First Nanjing University”. There are still problems and shortcomings such as insufficient sense of responsibility and mission, insufficient work style, and insufficient ability and skills.
Tan Tianniu emphasized that our university should implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speeches at the National Science and Technology Conference, the National Science and Technology Awards Conference, and the Conference of Academicians of the Two Academies, and carry out the next step of work, and further enhance six awarenesses. First, further strengthen the sense of mission. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out: “The key to Chinese-style modernization lies in the modernization of science and technology.” Nanjing University is an important part of the country’s strategic scientific and technological forces. We must vigorously strengthen our sense of mission and responsibility. Second, further strengthen the sense of efficiency. “The world’s martial arts can only be broken by speed.” Once any opportunity is missed, it will be gone. We must have the spirit of “grabbing” to improve efficiency. Third, further strengthen the sense of hard work. “It is better to throw up your arms than to shout your throat.” Empty talk will harm the country, and hard work will make the country prosperous. General Secretary Xi Jinping has repeatedly emphasized hard work, and great undertakings are achieved through hard work. Fourth, further strengthen the sense of tackling tough problems, and dare to fight and face difficulties. Fifth, further strengthen the sense of reform, and change according to the situation and the times. Sixth, further strengthen the sense of cooperation, and take the initiative to take responsibility and cooperate.
In his concluding speech, Tan Zhemin fully affirmed the form and effectiveness of this meeting and recognized the work results of various units in the first half of the year. He pointed out that this meeting fully discussed the work of the next semester and clarified the next steps for the important work of the school. Tan Zhemin put forward requirements for the “Forging Ahead Action” and the school’s administrative work: cadres should continue to work hard; institutional reform should continue to advance; and the capacity building of the main leaders of colleges, departments and offices should be further improved.
Tan Zhemin emphasized that the results of the school inspection and rectification work should be implemented in daily life; vigorously strive for major national projects in humanities and social sciences, highlight the core strength of NCU’s liberal arts, and continue to promote organized scientific research; further strengthen the “big security” work and maximize the efficiency of the use of existing resources; further follow up on the construction of key projects, continue to promote discipline construction and layout, and serve the country’s economic and social development; benchmark long-term benefits, adhere to system construction and team building; based on a new starting point, optimize and promote undergraduate talent training and enrollment; grasp the construction and management of major scientific research platforms and major scientific research projects. He asked all units to use the summer vacation time to spend a lot of effort to think about and sort out the next key work ideas.
During the meeting, the members of the school leadership team reported and discussed the highlights, landmark progress, existing problems and next steps of the “Fenjin Action” in light of the leading plan and their respective division of labor, and compared with the key points of the school’s work in 2024. Yang Zhong, executive deputy secretary of the school party committee, reported on the “Action Plan for Building a Team of Cadres with ‘Three Strong’ Political Capabilities and Work Styles”, “Action Plan for Promoting the Modernization of the School’s Governance System and Governance Capabilities”, and “Action Plan for Ensuring the Implementation and Effectiveness of School Decision-making and Deployment”. Liu Miao, deputy secretary of the school party committee and secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission, reported on the work of the Discipline Inspection Commission and the Office of the Supervisory Commissioner of Nanjing University in the first half of the year. Chen Yunsong, deputy secretary of the school party committee, reported on the “Action Plan for Party Building and Ideological Work”, “Action Plan for the Construction of Independent Knowledge System and Improvement of Advisory Service Capabilities”, “Action Plan for the Construction of Modern Civilization of the Chinese Nation”, and the “Action Plan for Telling the Story of Nanjing University Well”. Zou Yajun, member of the Standing Committee of the school party committee and vice president, reported on the implementation progress of the “Action Plan for Improving the Quality of Logistics Services and Security Assurance” and the “Action Plan for Resource Expansion and Aggregation”. Wang Zhenlin, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of the University, reported on the progress of the “Action Plan for Innovation and Quality Improvement of Graduate Education” and the “Action Plan for Talent Team Building”. Vice President Lu Yanqing reported on the implementation of the “Action Plan for Optimizing Discipline Layout”, “Action Plan for Improving the Internationalization of School Management” and “Action Plan for Building ‘Smart Nanjing University'”. Lu Xiancai, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of the University, reported on the progress of the “Action Plan for Cultivating Outstanding Undergraduate Innovative Talents”. Entrusted by Zheng Hairong, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of the University, Li Bin, Assistant to the President, reported on the implementation of the “Action Plan for Promoting Efficient, Orderly and Benign Linkage among the Four Campuses and the Construction and Development of the Suzhou Campus”. The heads of the Science and Technology Department and the Dual Innovation Office reported on the progress of the “Action Plan for Strengthening Organized Scientific Research”, “Action Plan for Improving the Ability to Serve the National and Regional Economic and Social Development”, and “Action Plan for Comprehensively Supporting the New Practice of Chinese-style Modernization in Jiangsu”.
All school leaders and heads of all functional departments of Nanjing University attended the meeting.
