The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is one of the most prestigious and sought-after careers, with many aspiring candidates aiming to clear the challenging exam. Each year, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) organizes the Civil Services Examination (CSE) to select individuals for various services, including the IAS, Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other important posts. Despite the immense popularity and social prestige of the IAS, many candidates still choose to pursue the IFS and IPS. One such individual is Apala Mishra, who achieved an impressive All India Rank (AIR) 9 in the UPSC CSE but decided to follow her passion by opting for the IFS over the IAS. Apala Mishra’s inspiring journey serves as a motivation for many aspiring civil servants.
Apala Mishra, born in 1997, comes from an army background in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Her father, Amitabh Mishra, is a colonel in the Army, while her brother, Abhishek Mishra, serves as a major. Her mother, Dr. Alpana Mishra, is a professor in the Hindi department at Delhi University.
Apala completed her schooling up to class 10 in Dehradun and later finished her class 12 in Rohini, Delhi. Mishra appeared for the UPSC Civil Services exam three times before securing an All India Rank (AIR) 9 in 2020. She had previously failed the UPSC Prelims in 2018 and 2019.
