Sumegha Garg, from the Bathinda district of Punjab, not only secured the 12th rank in the IIT-JEE 2011 exam but also topped the competitive exam among all the girls. Her success made history for her family, following the path set by her brother, Ankit, who had secured the 6th rank in the IIT-JEE exam in 2007. Inspired by her brother’s accomplishments, Sumegha was motivated to pursue engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Although she expected a good rank, she never imagined she would be the top scorer among the girls.

After clearing the JEE exam, Sumegha completed her B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Delhi. As per her LinkedIn profile, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University. Post-B.Tech, she also had the opportunity to work as a visiting student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Furthermore, Sumegha served as a Rabin Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University.

“I am an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at Rutgers University and part of the Theory of Computing Group. My research interests are in complexity theory, algorithmic fairness and information theory. Currently, I am interested in determining memory requirements for various estimation and learning tasks, and developing a theory of fair predictions,” reads her bio on Google Sites.

Sumegha, who achieved the 12th rank in JEE 2011, is currently a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University in the United States. Speaking of her family, Sumegha Garg’s family comes from Mudki village near Firozpur, where her grandfather worked as a commission agent in the local grain market.

As per the News18 Hindi report, Sumegha’s mother, Urmila Devi, a biology teacher, mentioned that Sumegha initially aspired to be a doctor but later chose to pursue and crack the IIT exam. Sumegha has consistently proven herself to be an all-rounder, excelling not only academically but also in sports.
