UPSC Success Story: Clearing the UPSC exam is no small feat—it demands rigorous preparation and often requires significant financial backing from one’s family. In this article, we will talk about M Sivaguru Prabhakaran from Tamil Nadu, who cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination (UPSC CSE) in 2017, despite facing numerous personal and financial struggles. His perseverance and determination have made him a beacon of inspiration in his community.

Born into a farming family, Prabhakaran grew up amidst financial hardships and family challenges. His father’s struggle with alcoholism placed the entire burden of sustaining the household on his mother and sister. These difficult times shaped Prabhakaran’s resilience and prepared him to face adversity with determination.

Because of these hurdles, Prabhakaran had to once stop his studies and work as a sawmill operator. He worked there for two years while engaging in some farming activities to support his family.

He witnessed his mother and sister working tirelessly in the fields during the day and weaving bamboo baskets at night to sustain the family.

Driven by a determination to build a better future, Prabhakaran carefully divided his modest income between supporting his family and pursuing his education. After his sister’s marriage, he resumed his studies while also funding his brother’s education. Despite these challenges, he secured admission to the civil engineering program at Thanthai Periyar Government Institute of Technology in Vellore in 2008.

To make ends meet and cover his college tuition, Prabhakaran took on temporary jobs during his spare time. He attended classes on weekdays and spent his weekends studying on the platforms of St. Thomas Mount railway station, making the most of every opportunity to pursue his dreams.

As the saying goes, hard work paves the way to success. Prabhakaran’s unwavering dedication paid off when he cleared the IIT Madras entrance exam for M.Tech, eventually earning his postgraduate degree in 2014.
