UPSC Success Story: Through sheer determination, resilience, and hard work, several people from humble backgrounds have achieved success in the UPSC Civil Services Examination(CSE) and have become IAS (Indian Administrative Service). Despite facing financial and social challenges, these individuals often manage to excel by dedicating countless hours to self-study, using affordable resources like NCERT books, online materials, and sometimes support from government libraries. Speaking of the same, meet a man who used to sell bangles with his mother, and cleared UPSC to become an IAS officer with AIR…, he is…
Ramesh Gholap was born in Mahagaon, a village in Maharashtra’s Solapur district, to Gorakh Gholap, who ran a small bicycle repair shop. His father’s modest earnings supported their family of four, which included Ramesh’s mother, Vimal Gholap, and his brother. However, their financial situation worsened when Gorakh’s health declined due to alcoholism, forcing him to close the shop. In a show of resilience, Ramesh’s mother, Vimal, started selling bangles in nearby villages to make ends meet. Despite being affected by polio in his left leg, Ramesh joined his mother, selling bangles on the streets to support his family.
Ramesh was a bright student and a star in his school in Barsi. However, in 2005, his life took a difficult turn when he received the devastating news of his father’s passing. Lacking enough money for bus fare to attend the funeral, he was only able to reach his father’s last rites with the help of his neighbors. This moment deeply impacted him, making him realize that education was his path out of poverty. From then on, he committed himself to his studies with unwavering determination, working hard to build a better future for himself and his family.
Despite excelling in his studies, financial constraints pushed Ramesh to seek a stable job rather than pursue ambitious goals. He completed a degree in arts from an open university and became a teacher in 2009. However, a chance encounter with a tehsildar during his college years sparked a new ambition in him. Inspired, he decided to quit his job and moved to Pune to prepare for the UPSC exam. His mother supported him tirelessly, working hard to save up funds for his education, as fate had something greater in store for him.
Ramesh prepared for the UPSC on his own, driven by determination and resilience. Though he faced failure in his first attempt in 2010, his unwavering commitment paid off when he cleared the Civil Services Examination in 2012. Securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 287 under the handicapped quota, he achieved his dream of becoming an IAS officer, overcoming numerous obstacles along the way. Currently, IAS Ramesh Gholap is posted as the Joint Secretary in Jharkhand Energy Department.
