Success Story: All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them. Nothing can summarise this proverb better than the inspirational story of Satyam Kumar, who, from a poor background, became the youngest IITian in India. Satyam, the son of a farmer, achieved a remarkable feat by clearing one of India’s toughest exams, the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), in 2013 at just 13 years old. After securing an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 679, he earned a spot at the renowned Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kanpur, where he opted for a BTech-MTech dual degree in Electrical Engineering.

Satyam has been a brilliant student since childhood, and he proved his exceptional abilities by becoming the youngest prodigy to crack one of India’s toughest exams at just 13 years old. Before him, the record was held by Sahal Kaushik, who achieved this milestone at the age of 14. However, it is reported that Satyam appeared for the JEE exam twice.

At first, Satyam reportedly first attempted the IIT-JEE in 2012 at the age of 12, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 8137. Unsatisfied with the result, he reappeared and successfully cracked the exam with an AIR of 679. Following this achievement, Satyam went on to join IIT Kanpur.

Hailing from the Bhojpur district in Bihar, Satyam was born on July 20 to Sidhnath Singh, a poor farmer. According to a PTI report (2013), Satyam’s uncle, Pashupati Singh, a clerk at the local Veer Kuer Singh College, revealed that Satyam had no formal schooling until the eighth grade. This was due to the family’s poor economic conditions and the lack of basic educational facilities at the village government school.

Satyam first attended school in 2007 when he joined the eighth grade. After clearing the Rajasthan board exam, he was admitted to Modern School in Kota. According to his uncle, Pashupati Singh, the school’s principal, R.K. Verma, covered all his educational and coaching expenses for the IIT entrance exam, the report further mentioned.

Driven by a thirst for knowledge, Satyam completed a combined BTech-MTech degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 2018. His passion for academia didn’t stop there; in 2019 he went on to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin, eager to continue his educational journey.

While studying at IIT Kanpur, Satyam worked on three notable projects: “Optimisation of electrode positions in Different Brain Computer Interfaces”, “Electrooculogram based eye blink classification During EOG signal acquisition”, and “Imaginative Speech based Brain-Computer Interface”, India Today reported.

After completing his further studies, Satyam began his professional career at Apple at the age of 24, working as a machine learning intern until August 2023. According to his LinkedIn profile, his current focus is on brain-computer interfaces, where he is making significant progress as a graduate research assistant at the renowned University of Texas at Austin.
