IAS Smita Sabharwal – Schooling


Born on June 19, 1977, into a Bengali family in Darjeeling, West Bengal, Smita Sabharwal is the daughter of Army officer Colonel Pranab Das and Purabi Das. At a very young age, reportedly 23 years old, Smita Sabharwal cleared the UPSC examination, becoming one of the youngest female IAS officers in India. Smita Sabharwal completed her schooling at St. Ann’s High School in Secunderabad(Telangana).

Speaking of her college life, she finished her graduation in commerce from St Francis College for Women, a Catholic minority institution which is located in Begumpet, Hyderabad. It is to be noted that she was the All-India topper in the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education(ICSE) examination.

IAS Smita Sabharwal – ‘People’s Officer’


IAS officer Smita Sabharwal is widely known as the “people’s officer.” She has served in various locations across Telangana, including Warangal, Visakhapatnam, Karimnagar, and Chittoor. Notably, she is also the youngest officer to have been posted at the Chief Minister’s office.

Smita Sabharwal is an Indian Administrative Officer(IAS) of the 2001 batch. Sabharwal cleared the UPSC exam in 2000, securing an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 4. Earlier in January 2024, Senior bureaucrat and secretary in Telangana Chief Minister’s Office Sabharwal took charge as member secretary of the TS Finance Corporation. Sharing a post on X(previously Twitter), she wrote, “Everything becomes relevant when you put your heart into it. Today I took charge as Member Secretary, TS Finance Commision. My 12th assignment after a series of field postings! Intend to make this one just as productive.”

IAS Smita Sabharwal And Recent Controversy


Smita Sabharwal sparked controversy with her remarks during the debate on reservation for UPSC aspirants under the PwD category. This discussion was ignited by the controversy surrounding the recruitment of IAS probationary officer Puja Khedkar under the disability quota. She questioned the necessity of a disability quota in the IAS and suggested that individuals with disabilities might struggle to meet the demands of the service.

She wrote, “With all due respect to the Differently Abled. Does an Airline hire a pilot with a disability? Or would you trust a surgeon with a disability? The nature of IAS/IPS/IFoS is field work, long taxing hours, and listening first-hand to people’s grievances-which requires physical fitness. Why does this premier service need this quota in the first place!”

Smitha Sabharwal as the secretary to the Chief Minister was a powerful officer under the previous government of BRS. After the Congress party came to power, she was transferred out of the Chief Minister’s Office in January this year and posted as member secretary of the Telangana State Finance Commission.
