Supreme Court Collegium Recommendations in May 2024
On 17-05-2024, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai resolved to recommend the appointment of 2 Additional Judges of Gauhati High Court as Permanent Judges and extension of term of Additional Judge of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
Supreme Court of India
The Supreme Court began this month with a reduced strength of 33 Judges as against 34 Judges due to the retirement of in April 2024. However, in May 2024, the number of Judges in the Supreme Court dwindled further to 32 as Justice A.S. Bopanna retired on 18-05-2024 right before the commencement of summer vacations from 20-05-2024.
Immensely respected within the legal fraternity for ensuring transparency, Justice Ajjikuttira Somaiah Bopanna began his legal journey in 1984 and step by step rose up the ladder to eventually ascend to the topmost Court of India.
In his 5-year tenure as a Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Bopanna had been a part of several landmark judgments such as Immunity of MPs and MLAs; extent of Freedom of Speech by politicians; Demonetization judgment and the historic verdict on Right to Safe Abortion, to name a few.
