Taking suo motu cognisance of a video from Manipur showing two women being molested and paraded naked, the Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to both the Central and State government, seeking details about the steps taken against the guilty within one week.
Terming the video as ‘deeply disturbing,’ the Bench led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud observed that the use of women as an instrument of perpetrated violence in a charged atmosphere was completely unacceptable and against constitutional democracy.
The Apex Court directed the Union of India and the State of Manipur to submit in detail, the steps taken to bring the perpetrators to book, as well as to prevent such incidents in future.
Talking about the video, which was apparently shot around two months ago but released a few days back, the Bench said the video may be from the month of May, but it did not make any difference.
The top court of the country observed that the visuals which had appeared in the video and portrayed in the media showed gross constitutional violation and infraction of human life.
The Apex Court listed the matter for further hearing on July 28.
