State universities in Maharashtra, India, are being encouraged to offer more undergraduate (UG) courses to boost enrolment, which has been declining in their postgraduate (PG) programs. The move is in line with the University Grants Commission's guidelines for the National Education Policy, which promotes multi-disciplinary education from UG to PhD. By offering UG programs on their own campuses, universities can also have a direct stake in UG syllabus formation committees, which are currently dominated by teachers from affiliated colleges. The universities plan to develop physical infrastructure to accommodate the new UG programs.
