Madras High Court disposes of plea seeking time frame for appointment of Vice Chancellor of universities in Tamil Nadu

The Madras High Court has disposed a petition seeking direction to the respondents to immediately bring out specific enforceable norms of a fixed time frame to complete the process of appointment of a Vice Chancellor of any state University so that there is no discontinuity or disruption in the effective functioning of State Universities in Tamil Nadu in order to protect the student community and higher education in Tamil Nadu.

The petition is filed by Change India represented by its director.

Counter-affidavit is filed. Reference is made to the Tamil Nadu Universities (Amendment) Act, 2017, wherein time-frame is provided to start the process for appointment of Vice-Chancellor and to conclude the same.

P.Muthukumar, the State Government Pleader, submits that in the year 2022 also, the Tamil Nadu Universities Laws Act was also introduced and it was passed by the Legislative Assembly.

In the light of the same, the petition is disposed of by the Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjay V. Gangapurwala and Justice P.D. Audikesavalu
