Importance of building the habit of reading books in children

‘Learn and Lead’
is the motto of London Montessori School. We strongly believe that reading helps gain a lot of virtues.

At London Montessori, we introduce books at a very young age. Being ardent fans of Dr.Seuss, we follow his philosophies and doctrines and make sure that the children will go places. Reading opens an entirely new magical world to the readers. You can travel to places for free. Science shows that reading to a baby in the womb helps develop early language learning. In small children, reading is proven to help with language development and increased word recognition, create a positive bond between parent and child, provide a great wind-down before bedtime, and spark an early interest in learning that carries over to later years. The Library at London Montessori Schools facilitates the child to borrow a book every week and exchange it for another book the next week. This way, the child feels responsible for the book and the parent knows what kind of book is appropriate for the child. Few of the book collections we use for the book bags are listed below.

Dramatic Plays and Puppet Shows

Dramatic plays and puppet shows are done often to showcase the stories learnt.

Millionaires and Reading

One of the habits that differentiate a millionaire from others is the reading habit. According to Thomas Stanley, who studied 600 millionaires for her book, ‘Millionaire Next Door’ clearly explains that one of the six key factors that influence someone to become a millionaire is reading. Bill Gates reads for more than an hour, every day. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg vows to read at least 2 books a week, to know more about the different cultures. Warren Buffet still jokes around saying that he has a lot of books lying around his chair.

● As Dr. Seuss once wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Diving into a good book opens up a whole world of knowledge starting from a very young age. Exposure to vocabulary through reading (particularly reading children’s books) not only leads to higher scores on reading tests, but also higher scores on general tests of intelligence for children. Plus, stronger early reading skills may mean higher intelligence later in life.

● Not only does regular reading help make you smarter, but it can also actually increase your brain power. Just like going for a jog exercises your cardiovascular system, reading regularly improves memory function by giving your brain a good workout. With age comes a decline in memory and brain function, but regular reading may help slow the process, keeping minds sharper longer, according to research published in Neurology. Frequent brain exercise was able to lower mental decline by 32 percent, reports The Huffington Post.

● It may help fight Alzheimer’s disease. Reading puts your brain to work, and that is a very good thing. Those who engage their brains through activities such as reading, chess, or puzzles, could be 2.5 times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than those who spend their downtime on less stimulating activities.
