16 Identification of an element using X-ray imaging of a single atom

cu-20230609103618.jpg

Recently, scientists have achieved a major achievement by identifying an element with the help of X-ray imaging of a single atom . X-rays, discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895, have been used in a variety of fields, including medicine and security. has become an integral part. First, the smallest amount of sample that can be X-rayed is an attogram (which is about 10,000 atoms or more). Scientists have long wanted to succeed in X-raying just a single atom, which has now become possible. Scientists have used a technique called synchrotron X-ray scanning tunneling microscopy (SX-STM) to detect the X-ray signature of an atom for the first time. The SX-STM combines scanning tunneling microscopy with synchrotron X-ray, These are high-energy X-rays produced after electrons have been accelerated in a circular path. It uses a sharp metal top (tip) that is in close proximity to the electrons in a sample. Synchrotron X-rays excite the sample and the metal tip collects the photoelectrons emitted by the atom to reveal its identity and chemical properties.
