The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) Energy Consortium collaborated with Shell India to establish the ‘Shell IITM Centre for Energy Research’ (SICER). The inauguration ceremony was held today (May 22, 2024) at the Shell Technology Centre in Bengaluru, marking a major step forward in the partnership between academia and industry.

Over the next five years, SICER will serve as the hub for this collaboration, focusing on innovation, research, development, piloting, and commercialization of energy sector technologies. The key outcomes include collaborative research on critical challenges and opportunities in the energy transition sector, incubation of energy start-ups leveraging IIT Madras’s start-up ecosystem, and the establishment of the Shell Chair Professorship. This professorship will facilitate knowledge exchange between Shell and IIT Madras and ensure Shell’s continued participation in the Energy Consortium.

Dr. Ajay Mehta, VP of Engineering Technology at Shell, emphasized the unique aspects of this partnership, stating, that they are proud to expand their collaboration with IIT Madras through the launch of the Shell IITM Centre for Energy Research (SICER). This initiative demonstrates their commitment to promoting open innovation, research, and technology development across the energy transition spectrum. Our past bilateral R&D projects with IIT Madras have been highly successful. This collaboration will allow us to share our knowledge and resources with IITM while utilizing their expertise, R&D facilities, and innovation ecosystem to address one of the world’s most critical challenges – the energy transition.

As part of the initiative, Dr. Satyanarayanan Seshadri was named the first-ever Shell Chair Professor at IIT Madras. Dr. Seshadri, who heads the Energy Consortium and is a faculty member in the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering at IIT Madras, brings extensive expertise to the role. His leadership will be vital in steering the research activities at the new center and fostering collaboration between academia and industry.

Dr. Nikhil Tambe, CEO of the Energy Consortium at IIT Madras, stated that they are excited to announce the launch of SICER and the appointment of Dr. Seshadri as our inaugural Shell Chair Professor. This milestone will significantly advance their collaborative efforts with Shell in strategic areas of advanced energy research and innovation.
