IIT BHU is offering new courses including Ceramic Engineering

IIT BHU Varanasi offers a four-year BTech program in Ceramic Engineering, aimed at educating and training students in Ceramic and Glass science and technology. Additionally, the institute provides an Integrated Dual Degree (five-year BTech + MTech) program in Ceramics Engineering.

These programs are specifically designed to provide fundamental technical knowledge and skills in traditional ceramics, encompassing glass, pottery, porcelain, whitewares, cement, refractories, and furnace technology.

Admission to both the BTech and IDD Ceramic Engineering programs is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the IITs.

The BTech Ceramic Engineering Programme is a four-year engineering degree program tailored to educate and train students in the field of Ceramic and Glass science and technology. It encompasses a curriculum of Institute Science and Engineering courses. Students have the option to specialize in a particular stream through a combination of project work and courses.

The Integrated Dual Degree (IDD) Ceramic Engineering Programme spans five years and aims to educate and train students in Ceramic and Glass science and technology, awarding both BTech and MTech degrees upon completion. During the last two years of the program, students engage in research and development projects for their Master’s Thesis. Those who qualify for GATE receive Institute TAship during the fifth year.

In 2023, the average annual salary (Mean CTC) reached Rs 24.11 lakh, with the highest annual salary (CTC) hitting Rs 40.18 lakh, representing a 68.71% increase.

Eligibility criteria include holding a BTech or an equivalent degree in Ceramic, Civil, Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Materials Science and Technology, or Silicate Technology. Alternatively, candidates may hold an MSc in Physics (with special papers in Solid State or Electronics), Electronics, or Chemistry (with special papers in Physical, Inorganic, or Solid State Chemistry), provided they have passed the BSc or BSc (Hons.) Examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Among the notable graduates from IIT BHU’s Ceramic Engineering department in Varanasi are:

  • Deepak P. Ahuja, from the class of 1985, formerly served as the Chief Financial Officer at Tesla.
  • Bimlendra Jha, class of 1990, formerly held positions as CEO/Managing Director at Ambuja Cements Ltd.
  • Dr. K. Muraleedharan, class of 1983, formerly served as Director at the Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute.
  • Dharamveer Singh Chouhan, class of 2012, is the Co-founder and CEO of Zostel.
  • Nandita Sinha, class of 2003, currently serves as the CEO of Myntra.
  • Amit Walia, class of 1995, is the CEO at Informatica.

Some of the top companies that recruited from IIT BHU in 2023 include SAINT-GOBAIN, JSW Steel, Ambuja Cement, CERA, IMERYS, TATA STEEL, SOMANY, ThougtSpot, Zomato, OLA, Udaan, Swiggy, Amazon, LimeChat, AXIS BANK, Walmart, and many others.
