IIM Sambalpur has organized the second edition of a 12-day weekend certificate program called the ‘Small Business Management Training Programme’ for master weavers of western Odisha, supported by SIDBI. Conducted under the Centre for Responsible Business, the program covers topics such as design, digital marketing, GST, financial management, operations, and communication skills.

Around 25 master weavers are participating in the training, which priortizes market engagement through digital platforms like Flipkart, Amazon, and ONDC, according to the Institute. Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director of IIM Sambalpur, emphasized the institute’s dedication to recognizing and supporting India’s indigenous handloom industry. He noted that before British colonization, India accounted for 25 percent of the world’s textile production, a significant difference from the present day, where this contribution has decreased to less than 3 percent.

Prof. Jaiswal said that they believe the textile industry is essential for India’s development. To enhance marketing and distribution, we initially partnered with Flipkart. However, its been recognized that the skilled master weavers and artisans need basic business knowledge in areas such as GST, invoicing, and marketing, delivered in the Odia language. This pioneering effort makes IIM Sambalpur the first management institute in India to offer business education in the vernacular language, specifically aimed at supporting local enterprises.

The director further emphasized that the next phase of training is aimed at improving the weavers’ market creation skills. The curriculum will cover the five Ps of marketing (Product, Price, Place, Promotion, and People) and include an exploration of global market trends. He said that to support this process, incubation support is essential. Therefore, a startup focused on global product marketing has been launched. Their ultimate goal is to establish a ‘Bunkar Valley’, similar to Silicon Valley, with a specific focus on elevating India’s weaving industry on the global stage.
