Standardized testing has a long history in the United States. The first standardized tests were created in the early 1900s to measure student progress. They were called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT. The SAT was popularized by the United States Naval Academy and became one of the most commonly used tests in the country.

In the 1930s, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) began to measure student progress in math and reading. The NAEP was developed by the National Research Council and became one of the most frequently used tests in the country.

In the 1970s, the federal government began to fund statewide standardized tests in order to improve the quality of education in the United States. The most well-known of these tests was the SAT II. The SAT II was developed in response to the concerns of ACT students that the SAT was biased against them.

The SAT II was popularized by the University of California, Berkeley. In 2003, the SAT II was replaced by the new SAT. The SAT is more difficult than the SAT II and is used to determine which colleges students are eligible to attend.

Standardized testing has continued to be a major part of American education. Today, standardized tests are used to measure student progress in math, reading, science, and English language arts.
